Program Descriptions
The Betsy Ross House is alive with the sights and sounds of the 18th century. You won’t just learn about colonial history here, you will’ll be a part of it!
Plan to stay for a while after you tour the house to enjoy our interactive, historical programming.
- Flag Raising Ceremony Start your day with Betsy Ross and her colonial counterparts, then tour the House, talk with Betsy and hear a story at our Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Bench.
- Meet Betsy Ross in Our New Upholstery Shop Meet Betsy in person, hard at work plying her trade, and have the chance to ask the famous lady, not only about how she came to sew the nations's first Stars & Stripes, but all about her fascinating life and business. See real upholsterer's tools and learn first-hand how they were used in this state-of the-art new exhibit made possible with the support of American Express.
- History Makers on Stage: Not all our history makers made the history books! Meet and hear the stories of ordinary (and extraordinary) 18th and 19th century Americans.
- Meet a Colonial Upholsterer: There was much more upholstery trade in 18th century America than most people know. Find out what skills and tools they needed to cover furniture, make Venetian blinds, hang wallpaper and much more.
- Meet Charles Weisgerber It was thanks to the passion of this fascinating gentleman that the Betsy Ross House was restored and opened to the public at the turn of the 20th century. He is also the painter of Birth of Our Nation's Flag, the famous work largely credited with bringing Betsy's story to the public in 1892. Now you can meet him and hear his story.
- Back to School Scavenger Hunt Join us over Labor Day weekend to hunt for colonial school supplies hidden around the House. Find them and get an end-of-summer surprise!
- Patriot Day Ceremony In remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
